Nicole Quiroz is a seasoned lifestyle and fashion journalist with a rad sense of style. She’s fond of the color black and describes her look as edgy (Think: leather, metallics, studs). Her blog, Novelista Fashionista, is a recent project in her life that she hopes will inspire other creatives.
We teamed up with Mahal Style to shoot some of Nicole’s favorite looks from our store and to do an exclusive interview about who she is as a blogger and a fashionista. It was clear that her favorite accessory was her adorable French Bulldog, Bree.
GRAFFITI BEACH: What is your fashion bible?
NICOLE QUIROZ: I love looking at Lookbook.nu. I feel like a lot of the trends that you see now start off on the streets and Lookbook.nu is a really great resource of fashion inspiration for those who really want to be a pioneer and be at the front of the line before it becomes a trend. It’s photos and profiles that showcases people’s styles.
GB: Are you fond of any particular styles that you feel you cannot pull off?
NQ: You know what’s really in right now are those peplum skirts… and neon! I can never pull off a really good neon or a peplum. [Peplums] just doesn’t look good on my body type. And with neon… I try it, but I can’t.
GB: You are also the EIC for Mahal Style, and you say you “Push for empowerment through fashion.” Why do you feel that’s important?
NQ: Fashion is self expression. In itself it is an art form that you can just express yourself and it portrays your personality without you having to say anything at all – without you having to say anything, write anything, or act a certain way – you just wear what you want and that in itself is empowering.
GB: You are Novelista Fashionista, what more can we expect from your blog?
NQ: You know with every post I really want it to have substance. I don’t want it to be your typical fashion blog. I really want it to be different and to stand out. This piece that we’re doing is the first time I am ever showcasing my own fashion style, showcasing local fashion. I really want it to be unique in which people learn something. Whether it’s a DIY flower crown, or how to make a cupcake tower, or be inspired by kid fashion. I have an 8 year old son who loves to be in front of the camera, and I love to dress him. It’s hard to dress a boy because it’s kind of boring. Pants, a shirt, shoes… shorts. That’s about it. And when you have fun and play with it a little bit, you just hope that someone is inspired by it. So with every entry, I like to do a little collage that ties into whatever subject matter I write about.
GB: If you could choose a single color to represent your current place in life, what color would that be?
NQ: It’s black everything! Just kidding. Cloud. Just because it’s white and blue, and I want to be free like a bird. Because I want to soar in the sky like a bird, through the clouds. That doesn’t really sound like me – but it’s true!
